A coffee that tells the delicacy of the Kizi Rift highlands

In the heart of the Kizi Rift, one of Rwanda’s most renowned coffee regions, lies the Fugi Washing Station, led by Emmanuel Rutsatira and his community. At altitudes between 1800 and 2000 meters, Bourbon plants grow on mineral-rich volcanic soils, benefiting from a cool and stable climate that favors slow maturation and aromatic concentration.

From this combination comes a coffee with a bright and delicate identity: at first sip, notes of honey and chamomile emerge, followed by the freshness of green tea and fruity lychee. The finish, enriched with a subtle touch of cinnamon, adds depth and silkiness to the cup.

The Honey Sleeping Bag method: slow and precise sweetness

The cherries are hand-picked, carefully selected, and immediately depulped, leaving a layer of mucilage rich in natural sugars on the bean.

The beans are then placed on African beds and dried using the Sleeping Bag technique: during the day, they are covered with opaque tarps to retain humidity and heat, encouraging a slow and uniform fermentation. At night, they are uncovered, allowing a gradual release of residual moisture.

This controlled alternation between coverage and ventilation creates the ideal conditions to develop a refined aromatic profile, where every note finds its place with precision and harmony.

A project with a vision for the future

The Fugi station is also a hub for social sustainability. Emmanuel Rutsatira works closely with smallholder farmers, promoting regenerative agricultural practices and ensuring fair compensation. Part of the proceeds is allocated to a local breast cancer prevention project active in the community.
